Durham Scout Post

You should have received an email with a link to the latest Durham EPost.

It is a bit of a beast so if anyone spots any particularly pertinent points please email them to me so I can include them in next weeks update to draw our leaders attention to them.

If you didn't get the link it's here:

SANCTUARY 2018 - now 14th July

Unfortunately we have been forced to change the date of next years SANCTUARY event to address concerns over the risks associated with young people walking on roads at night. Moving the event into the summer was the only way we could address the concerns, and we appreciate this is a busier time for many people.Since there will no longer be a night time element to the event we also bring the event close forward by an hour, but we will review these changes after the 14th July. Minor changes to the kit list will follow in due course.

Shooting Stars Circus Skills are working in your area on the following dates in the Winter term.

March 5th – 9th & 19th – 30th

We would like to introduce you to Shooting Stars Circus Skills who offer Beavers, Cubs & Scout units the chance to enjoy the fun and excitement of a circus skills evening at a special discounted rate.

Whether they want to work on their Circus Activity Badge or just have a fun and creative evening, we can offer a brilliant workshop with a highly experienced instructor at the rate of:

£150.00 for a 1 - 2 hour session with one group

£240.00 for a 2 - 3 hour session with two groups (£120.00 per group)

£300.00 for a 3 - 5 hour session with three groups £100.00 per group)

£300.00 for an all day workshop (usually Saturday or Sunday 10.00 - 16.00)

The workshop consists of a circus instructor and circus equipment (which is tailored according to age groups, space available and length of session time). Examples include juggling balls, rings and scarves, spinning plates, diabolos, flower sticks, and larger equipment such as stilts, fun wheels, pedal racers, unicycles & mini-bikes. Equipment used will be at the discretion of your instructor.

With the volume and variety of equipment available, we can take a group of up to 30 children/young people per workshop, keeping them involved and engaged at all times. If we are running workshops specifically for the Circus Activity Badge, then equipment available will be tailored for this event.

Durham City Scout Network Takes Flight!

Durham City Scout Network had its first meeting this week, finding out what Network is all about before trying some archery at Fram – some of it far better at it than others! It was fantastic to meet people from all over the District, eat loads of snacks, and get some ideas for what we want to do as a Network.
Network is a great opportunity to stay involved in scouting after you turn 18 alongside other adult roles. It is free to join and open to anyone age 18-25 in the District – if you're interested or know anyone that might be join our facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/durhamcitynetwork/
and get stuck in!

Provisional District Scout Program 2018 (and a few other bits)

Please find attached a provisional district program for 2018, I've based the dates around those of last year. If anyone has any comments or suggestions please let me know.

Meetings: I'm aware we missed out usual meeting at the start of this term due to the changeover. I was hoping to have one by the end of the year but that's fast approaching and filling up, therefore I think it best to hold our usual meeting during the Indoor Scouting competition.

If I've missed anything or you'd like to chat about something please don't hesitate in getting in touch.

Programme Support Meeting

Don't forget that this coming Wednesday is our regular County programme support meeting, which is open to all section leaders and commissioners. Come along to find about the pending changes to POR activity rules and updates to a number of sectional badges. This is also your opportunity to chat with fellow leaders and supporters about successes in your section, what's working well (and what may not be) and challenges you may be facing in delivering the programme.

This is YOUR opportunity to get the programme support you tell us you want.

Venue: Moor House Adventure Centre (Main House)
Date: Wednesday 6th December 2017
Time: 7.00 pm

Adult Recruitment Workshops

Also remember that Saturday 9th December is our Adult Recruitment Workshop where you and your colleagues can find out all about how to more effectively recruit more adult volunteers in to your section / group.

The workshops will cover:

Introduction to recruitment and defining the role
Looking at Skills and Qualities
Name Generation
Recruitment events
Promoting Scouting

These workshops are best attended by 2-3 people from a group or district, by people who will have some time to commit to planning and executing successful adult recruitment strategies. Please note that we need to have sufficient numbers confirmed in the next few days to ensure that this workshop (which every District has asked for) goes ahead. It is therefore essential that if you're intending to come along, you use the button below to book NOW.
