County Social Media

Over the last few weeks we’ve had some super opportunities (see below), but applications for some of these are time critical and we don’t want any of our young people to miss out. Word spreads quickly via social media and sometimes we know that people don’t receive or read e-mails. Please therefore encourage all leaders and young people of an appropriate age to sign up to county social media, to receive news of these opportunities as soon as they are available.

The counties Facebook page and various groups are the best place to find out first and keep on top of what’s going on, so we should also encourage people to follow the county Twitter feed. We will of course continue to use more traditional channels (e-mails and the Durham ePost), but please explain to all of our leaders that our young people stand the best chance of hearing about these opportunities if they’re connected on-line via social media.

Manager and Supporter Training

This week I received updates from the Regional Commissioner on Manager and Support training. Dates have been revised and for 2018 the dates planned are as follows.

24/25 February
17/18 March
14/15 April
12/13 May
29/30 Sept
24/25 Nov

13 & 20 January are TA (M&S) support days (Thirsk).

Estimated costs for these courses are:

· Weekend course: £150 (plus travel costs within the region)

· Day course: £50 (plus travel costs within the region)

Please note that the 2018 county levy includes no provision for these costs. While I will ask the county executive committee to review proposals for the county to provide some financial support for these courses (out of the money we will save by not delivering the previous manager and supporter modules) we do not expect that any support will be significant. This means that groups and districts will need to find money for the bulk of these costs.

These costs are based on manager and supporter training being held at e.g. university or hotel conference facilities and I would be interested in receiving feedback on these estimated costs, so that we can feed this back to the regional training team.

Adult Recruitment Workshops

In the coming months the Regional Services Team will be holding two Adult Recruitment Workshops, which will be open to all members of the county. Please ensure that people understand that these are not intended to find adult volunteers for sections and groups, but that they are designed to teach groups and districts how to be more successful in their own local adult recruitment activities. They will be most useful if small teams from groups and districts attend together. Dates, times and locations will be:

Saturday 9th December 2017 10:00 till 16:00 Whickham Thorns Outdoor Activity Centre, Market Lane, Gateshead, NE11 9NX
Saturday 10th/Sunday 11th March 2018 15:00 till 18:00 & 09:00 till 12:00 West Hall Scout Campsite, Moor Lane, Whitburn, SR6 7JT

Note that the second date is part of a broader practical skills training session being organised by South Tyneside and Sunderland districts. Attendees at the adult recruitment sessions are invited to camp overnight (at no charge) but note that there is no catering included.

Invitations will be issued for the first session very shortly but places will be allocated via EventBrite on a first come, first confirmed basis.

Durham City Network

Know anyone aged 18-25 in the district? We’re trying to get a group together to start Network for Durham City and holding our first meeting this week. Come along to find out more about Network, meet people from around the district and help us plan some events for the next term.

We’ll be meeting upstairs in Esquires café in town at 6:15pm this Thursday 30th November, please join the Facebook group for full info and to find out about future events: https://www.facebook.com/groups/durhamcitynetwork/

If you know anyone aged 18-25 in the district please pass on the message!

District Campsite

I am delighted to be able to confirm we now hold the lease for Coalburns Plantation - our new District Campsite.

There are a few things that really need to be sorted out over the next few months so it's properly ready for use in the spring - in-particular getting a mains water, parking and some fencing. We also need to set up a management committee who will be responsible for overseeing and developing the site and a separate/overlapping pool of volunteers to help with specific jobs around the site.

If you're keen to get involved please do let me know - the more the merrier!

Safeguarding Training

Chester-le- Street are hosting a mandatory safeguarding training session (for experienced leaders) and have some spaces. Please see below for info on how people can apply.

There is likely to be some spaces available for outside the district.

The booking form can be found on the training pages of our district website.

Safeguarding trainer training

There has been a change in policy nationally to do with training trainers to deliver face-to-face mandatory safeguarding training. In the past, potential trainers needed to attend a nationally-run 'train the trainer' session; now, Safeguarding Awareness Coordinators who are also trainers can cascade this training down.

The purpose of this message is to see if you have anyone in your district who might want to volunteer to take this on for your district; if you have people who are interested, if they can email me to let me know on

Anyone who does volunteer will need to attend a 'train the trainer' session which I will deliver (probably in the new year) after which I’ll talk to them about whether or not they will be comfortable delivering the training. I'll then co-present the first session with them.

Clay pigeon shooting

We have received the following offer - if anyone would like to follow it up on behalf of the District please do let me know ASAP.

I am the regional officer for BASC in the North East, as I am sure you are aware BASC have had a really positive relationship with the scouts over the years undertaking the big jamboree etc. We have continued this with a number of small events across the North for local scout groups also.

We would like to run an experience day for scout groups around the Durham area on April 28th 2018, in partnership with Gillian and Charles Elliot who run forest schools and offer catering from the family farm near Esh, Durham.

The day would involve;
· Introduction to clay shooting with a qualified BASC coach.
· Conservation habitat and species walk.
· Introduction to game, pigeon plucking and open fire cooking.

We would like to use the first day on the 28th April as a way of demonstrating what can be offered from the farm, with representative from a number of scout groups in the area attending. Then hopefully individual scout groups can book in for future events.

If this is of interest to you, I will enquire about BASC scout legacy funding for the event and we can start planning the day.

The Key

I've been in touch in the past regarding the opportunity that The Key can provide young people attending Scouts groups from Durham City District Scouts and thought you may be interested in learning more about it.

The Key work's with youth organisations to assist young people aged 11-25 to think, plan, do and review their very own project ideas and therefore help them to develop 12 Key Skills (including communication, problem solving, making decisions and more).

The youth led project ideas are funded by The Key, allowing young people to bring their ideas and dreams to life. This Framework, which helps young people to discover what they're capable of by encouraging them to explore their own ideas and passions, has impacted on the lives of over 9,000 young people across the North East, Cumbria and North Yorkshire over the last three years.

With the only limits being that the young people's project have to be safe and legal the opportunities for what the young people can plan is endless.

If you are interested in how young people can benefit from The Key please do not hesitate to contact me using the details provided.
