Cats Protection Workshops

I’m contacting you today to see if your district might be interested in some free talks about animal welfare from Cats Protection? As the largest feline welfare charity in the UK we are now trying to raise our profile as a charity in the North-East, as well as educate young people about cats in an area that statistically is very high with animal cruelty.

I’ve attached a flyer that tells a little bit about the talks we offer. They are very interactive, pitched to their age group, and usually last about 45 minutes. We deliver talks to Beaver, Cub and Scout groups. Whilst I realise that everyone is now getting into full flow for Christmas, I wondered if you would mind forwarding on the information about the talks to leaders in your district as something to consider after Christmas? It can count towards their ‘Friends to animals’ badge and we leave them with a selection of Cats Protection ‘goodies’ and a fun, age appropriate booklet that also reinforces the key animal welfare messages.

If you would like any more information or have any questions relating to this, please do not hesitate to contact me using the details below.

Compass Update

Some of you may have had an email relating to the upload of youth data into Compass. This will be completed by County and I would anticipate it starting in the next few weeks. I have very intentionally not pushed this process until the upload process is confirmed and working to minimise the risk of anyone having to get their data into the required format more than once - so for the moment please just be aware that this is coming.

Frostie

I expect many of you have already seen information about:
FROSTIE 24 for Scouts and Explorers.

Gateshead District is running Module 3 on Tuesday 25 Nov at their district HQ, Mitchell House from 7-9pm and they have offered this to other Districts.

Congratualtions

to Sam Vincent who successfully met with the Appointments team on Monday to confirm her role as ACSL at Coxhoe.

Training Courses

Please can I remind everyone that if you sign up for a training course run by either County or District that you should do your utmost to attend. If you cannot attend please send your apologies - it's fair to expect other volunteers to put on courses if leaders sign up and then don't attend.

District Young Leaders training

Sue, Kim and Iain are looking to offer Module A training for young leaders both to introduce the oung leader training scheme and gauge interest for a young leaders weekend. The team already have a firm date for offering the training in Gilesgate but would like to fix dates to work with the other Explorer units early next year.

The hope is if there is enough interest, to run a training weekend March 7-8 2015.

Please get in touch! kim@durhamcityscouts.org.uk

High Sheriff

During his year of office, the High Sheriff of County Durham, Mr Gerry Osborne is supporting the above awards for young people who have been nominated for a special contribution to their community. The awards are now in their nineteenth year and so far over 1200 deserving young people have received them.

These meritorious awards are given to young people who have contributed in a positive way to their community. They may have helped reduce crime in the area, faced personal hardship, performed courageous acts or helped other people in any number of ways.

Many young people quietly and generously perform good work in the community, often without recognition. I am therefore asking for your help in identifying one or more worthy recipients up to the age of eighteen for consideration for a Shrievalty Award, successful nominations will be presented with a Certificate of Merit at a ceremony in Durham Castle on Thursday 26th March 2015.

Young Leaders Good Service Award

I am delighted to be able to confirm the introduction of a Young Leaders Good Service Award in the County. This is a first and something that HQ are watching with interest.

Under the remit of the Commissioner’s Commendation Award and with the agreement of the County Commissioner, Young Leaders may be nominated for the Young Leaders Good Service Award and if granted, will be eligible to wear the Commissioner’s Commendation Award in recognition of their good service. They will also be invited to the County Awards Day to have their good service recognised by the County.

Nominations may be made by any adult with whom the Young Leader is working and should be endorsed by the Group Scout Leader of the Group in which the Young Leader is working or the Explorer Scout Leader of the District Young Leader Unit (or DESC if no ESL(YLU) is appointed). The criteria for making the award are as follows:

The Young Leader
- Must have completed Module A (“Prepare for Take Off!”)
- Must have completed some other optional Young Leader training modules and must be actively working on completing other optional Young Leader training modules
- Must be actively working towards the completion of optional Young Leader training Missions
- Must regularly have attended sectional meetings over a period of not less than two years (taking other Explorer Scout and educational commitments in to account)
- Must have demonstrated an exceptional level of good service over and above that normally expected of a Young Leader e.g. may be helping in more than one section, may be travelling a considerable distance to attend section meetings, may be taking significant responsibility for the planning and delivery of the section programme or for the administration of the section under a minimum level of supervision

I have attached a copy of the nomination form (in Word format for completion electronically and in PDF format for printing and completion by hand). Richard and I look forward to receiving the first nominations and to recognising the excellent work of our Young Leaders at the next Awards Day.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Administration

Please be advised that in order to support Stephen Ramsay while he is attending to some personal matters, I am temporarily managing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme in the County.

- If you have enrolment forms and payments ready to go you can send them to Stephen as usual. Alternatively you can send them directly to me (1, Sandringham Drive, Whickham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. NE16 5ZA).

- During this period I will also be approving Bronze and Silver DofE Awards in the County via the eDofE system.

Year of Adventure Resources

People power has worked and Gilwell have now released the resources for the Year of Adventure. They are available on the website

Can you share this information widely to all Cub Leaders and encourage them to take part so that every Cub in Durham County has the opportunity to take part in this build up to the Cub Centenary. I shall be in touch with details of a badge design competition.

Once I have digested all the info I'll be in touch regarding visiting Districts with a workshop/roadshow as previously discussed

India fundraising meetings

As part of our fundraising for our trip to India next year the Rangers (part of the Guide Associaition) have developed a meeting that can be run with a variety of sections. We are asking for contributions of £1 a head and for that we will come and run a night tailored to the unit, providing all the equipment needed. It's a great excuse for leaders to have a break from planning for a night and could also contribute towards the Global Challenge for Beavers and Cubs.

We would particularly like to thank all the leaders who helped on the day with admin tasks, setting up, tidying away, catering, marshalling, driving, catching and generally allowing the day to run smoothly.

As always we appreciate feedback so if you have any suggestions for improvements or potential venues we'd love to hear from you.

Next year SANCTUARY will be on Saturday 7th November

We hope to see you there if not before
