JOTI Update

Christingle Service

The District Christingle service will be at St Cuthberts on December 5th - we're still working on finalising the timings.

District Campsite Update

The District Campsite Group meet last week and our first jobs was to spend time reviewing the questionnaire that a number of you returned. Many thanks for doing this.

As was to be expected there was a wide range of views put forward so what we are doing is using general trend at looking at a site within 30 minutes drive from the centre of Durham and generally in a westerly direction. As clearly indicated by a number of you we will not be trying to compete with Moor House.

All members of the team have gone away with several jobs to do before we meet again in November, however, we are looking for anyone with contacts in the following areas :-

Land Agents
Farmers in the area
Information about small parcels of land

Please let me know if you have any feeling / ideas / thoughts about the way forward. All these will be treated in confidence.
ken@durhamcityscouts.org.uk

Once we have all the information in we will put a proposal to the District which eventually when agreed will be put to the District Executive for approval.

Chair District Campsite Group

Student Helpers

Thank you to everyone who helper at the Student Volunteering fair. The students who have expressed an interest (and those found by DUSAGG) have been contacted. Hopefully over the next few weeks we will be able to fill some of the vacancies within the District.

Jamboree

Congratulations to
Dylan Ridd, James Craig and Jessica Williams who were all selected to represent Durham City at the 2015 Jamboree. Commiserations to the disappointed applicants - but with a very limited number of spaces competition was always going to be fierce.

5th Durham Scouts, Explorers & Leaders will be attending the City of Durham Remembrance Service at Durham Cathedral and Parade through Durham on Sunday 10th November.

If there are any Scouts, Explorers or Leaders who are not attending there own Group event they would be very welcome to join us.

Ken

Student Helpers

If you would like a new student helper to assist your section please speak to your GSL and let me know ASAP. We already have quite a good list from the DUSAGG freshers fair last week and should generate some more on Tuesday evening. If in doubt please tell me again if you want some more helpers (preferably by the end of the week).

Cub Swimming Badge - Saturday 19 October 2013 - Hetton Pool, 15:30 - 16:30

In order to save time on the day it would be helpful if Cub Leaders could let Sarah have names and Stages of Cub swimming badge that your Cubs are working towards.

This will also mean we can allocate leaders accordingly.

We will need to have some leaders in the water so if you have leaders willing to swim along side could you please let Sarah know.

We will then need to have all remaining leaders on the side marking off each part of the badge as they complete them.

Can you please let Sarah have names of Cubs along with stage of badge and leaders names by no later than
Thursday 17 October.

Beaver Spooky Night

The Beaver Spooky Night will be on Monday 21st October at Waterhouses 6 - 7.30 pm.
The Beavers will be doing Halloween Crafts and a spooky night walk.

County Safeguarding Update

Mandatory Safeguarding Training for leaders whose appointment is due for review: numbers for the two courses I have presented this year have been small. This may be because most people did the training early on when it was first introduced. It could also be because leaders are opting for the on-line version. However, it could also be because reviews are not being carried out and therefore leaders are not being reminded of their obligations to keep up to date in the areas of safeguarding, safety, 1st aid and CRB/DBS clearance.

So, if you have not attended a safeguarding course run by me either in your district or at county level and you have not completed the learning on-line within the last 5 years, then you need to complete this training as a matter of urgency. The next county course is scheduled for 12th March 2014 from 7:00-9:00 at Moor House, but I will be happy to deliver the training sooner than that if it is called for. Please get in touch if you think you need to update your safeguarding knowledge.
e-safety: I am able to offer training to leaders to enable them, in turn, to train their young people in Internet safety, through ThinkUknow training. If you would like me to come into your district and deliver this course, please let me know.
Anti bullying: if bullying is a problem in your section / group, then I am able to come in and deliver a session which will help you deal with the issues.

Jamboree Unit Selection

I’m happy to let everyone know that the names of the young people who have been selected will be posted on the County website on Wednesday 9th October.

Confido

As I'm sure everyone knows it's Confido this weekend - if your Scouts/Explorers are attending please make sure I've got your NAN form (or at the very least know your numbers) ASAP.

Army Benevolent Fund Parade

We have been invited to send a small delegation (4 leaders + 4 Explorers) to join the Royal British Legion and the Army Benevolent Fund to publicise their Festival of Remembrance at the Cathedral on Saturday 9th November.

As you will of course know this is the same date as SANCTUARY - but if for some reason you aren't attending SANCTUARY (and I can't think of a conceivable reason myself) please let me know by the end of the week, otherwise I will send our apologies and see if another District can assist.

Shakespeare Trust Funding

The executive committee have compiled a report explaining the breakdown of the funding granted via the Shakespeare trust this year.
here

In line with the terms and conditions of the grants receipts need to be sent to the District Treasurer by the end of the year, and many are still outstanding.
