Roverway 2018 - Price and IST Applications

Since the last email regarding Roverway, there has been a good level of interest from across the County. As a reminder, if you (or your Explorers, Young Leaders or Network) would like to apply to attend Roverway, applications must be received by 31 July. Application forms can be downloaded from the Roverway page of the County website.
Price Revealed for Participants and IST

The UK Scout Contingent recently released the price of the event for both participants (aged 16-22) and the International Service Team (aged 23 and over). We expect some of this fee to be covered by active fundraising from the Patrol and would not like finance to be a barrier to participation, so please do not hesitate to get in touch in these circumstances.

IST Applications Open

Recruitment for the International Service Team has now opened. This is being managed centrally by the UK Scout Contingent. For those interested in applying, please visit the IST Zone of the Contingent website for more information on the programme and application process.

At Roverway, being a member of the IST is so much more than simply volunteering abroad. Due to the unique programme of Roverway, participants will spend the first 5 day of the event on a Path exploring the host country. Meanwhile, members of the IST will go to the central camp in Zeewolde to start building the event. This means that IST have five days at the camp beforehand to set-up but also experience the activities on offer.

Welcome to:

Ronnie Holmes as Assistant Section Leader at 5th Durham Cubs
Rebecca Duffy as Section Assistant - Scouts at 4th Durham (Gilesgate)
Jo Burnitt as Section Assistant - Beaver Scouts at 20th Durham (Waterhouses)
Gregory Hammell Saul as Section Assistant - Scouts 15th Durham (Elvet)
James Tate as Section Assistant - Scout at 15th Durham (Elvet)

I'm sure everyone will support hem through the rest of the appointments process and training.

Green card

Hopefully everyone has received their latest Scouting magazine and a copy of the Green Card which outlines the Scouts Association Alcohol policy. It's all common sense really - you can't do anything for young people if you've had a drink, so there need to be enough leaders who are entirely sober to deal with all eventualities.

Cub District Sports Night Wednesday 12 July

ust a quick reminder about Cubs Sports on Wednesday.

As there will be a large number of cars we will have the lay by open. Can you please ensure you ask parents to enter from the lay by and not to cross the central reservation to ensure the flow of traffic.

There will be some parking on site but if parents aren't stopping it would be easier if they could be met by a leader from your group to walk them down.

I am still in need of volunteers to be in the lay by and car park but these must be adults.

I also could do with some additional Young Leaders to help with running the races and helping make sure that equipment is sorted and ready for each race.

We will also have some Scouts from Fram who are attending an International camp in Kent this summer who will be selling sweets and a drink for £1. Can you please let parents know so that they have money with them on the night.

Hope to see you all on Wednesday at Moor House, 18:30 - 20:00.

Thank you

Sarah

5th Durham Beaver Leadership Apeal

As a number of you will already know Carol Beeby (Beavers) and Karen Harltey (Cubs) are standing down as leaders at 5th Durham at the summer break after many years service to 5th Durham.

After a lot of hard work over many months getting leaflets out locally and press articles 5th Durham are still looking for leaders.

We have been fortunate that Ronnie Holmes a leader from another District has offered to be Cub Scout Leader which is fantastic and he will take over during the summer. However one of the other leaders has emigrated to New Zealand and another one is off to University so the Cub team is small.

The position in Beavers is not so good as when Carol goes we are left with only one leader who because of work can only do ~ one week in three. We have a couple of adults who are interesting in supporting the Colony and one possible leader.
We plan to start up again in September where Ken will support the volunteers and start a parents rota.
If 5th do not get a solution by early October then we may regrettably have to close the Colony.

I know all groups have similar issues however there may be a leader who is looking for a new challenge.

Please let me know if can help in any way.

Ken Robertson

Group Scout Leader
5th Durham City Scout Group

Executive Committees

AGMs have been taking place across the District with new Executive Committee members being elected, nominated and co-opted to form new teams to support local Scouting. To help new members understand their role and its responsibilities, they are required to complete Essential Information for Executive Committee Members (Module 01E) within the first five months in the role.

Executive committee members must also have a DBS check and be listed on Compass.

Youth Awards 2017

Leaders please remember that you have until 20th July to complete registration of your youth members for this year's County Awards event at the xCEL centre in Newton Aycliffe.

This high profile, high impact event is memorable for both our your people and their parents and leaders (people are still talking about last years!). Please visit the Awards Event pages for more details and to register your young people, but hurry as we don't want any of our young award winners to miss out.

Aldwalk Water Weekend – 23rd-25th June 2017

Scouts met up with 4th Durham and had a brilliant joint water activities weekend at Aldwalk Scout Activity Centre. Between us be had over 40 people staying at the centre with sessions on the water all day Saturday and Sunday morning.

Adult Award Nominations

If we want any awards to be given out in the District this year we need volunteers to start identifying potential candidates.

As previously advised, please do think seriously about adult award nominations – it is important that we appropriately recognise our adult volunteers for their good service.

I would be delighted to see more St Georges Day Awards next year, however, I need to receive them by the end of July.

Programme Exchange Workshops

Please encourage leaders to sign up for October’s Programme Exchange workshops (see https://www.durhamscouts.org.uk/for-members/programme-support/programme-exchange-workshops/). Places genuinely are limited and people are already starting to sign up.

Youth Awards Nominations

There is now less than a month for Leaders to register their youth members for this September’s Awards Day (see https://www.durhamscouts.org.uk/events/awards-2017/ ). We don’t want any top award recipient to miss out on this great day, where this year the final session will be attended by the Chief Commissioner for England, Alex Peace-Gadsby. Please do therefore remind all section leaders to get their nominations in before 24th July.

Cub water day

A big thank you to everyone who helped at the Cub water day on Saturday - lots of positive feedback from the Cubs which is great.

New cycling campain

You may recognize the official ‘face’ of Durham and Cleveland’s Police’s campaign to make cycling safer…

Please follow the police advice and remember to give cyclists at least 1.5m of space and more if you’re exceeding 30mph.

District Scout Expedition

I have just had the pleasure of overseeing this year's Scout Expedition Challenge on behalf of Ian Dickinson with leaders from 4th, 15th and 19th helping out ensuring three Scout Patrols were safe on their hike from Penshaw to Shincliffe over two days.

We had a total of 14 Scouts out hiking over the weekend who set off in good spirits from Penshaw at staggered start times and it was noticeable how each Patrol worked extremely well together and showed good Scouting spirit, even when one Patrol was asking a member of the public which way the path went (that was behind them).

They all got to Moorhouse more or less on their timings and once the tents were pitched they cooked some good substantial meals whilst enjoying the warm evening sunshine. They even had a chance to do some fire lighting.

Sunday they were all up early (even earlier than the 150 Cubs camping on the other field) breakfasted with tents dismantled and away walking before 09:00 to finish at Shincliffe just just after lunchtime.

Everyone enjoyed the whole event and I would like to thank Paul, Beth, Mark and Slimer for their help over the two days of what has become a really good yearly event. Hopefully we will have even more Scouts taking part next year.

Mike
