District AGM

Thank you to everyone who attended last nights AGM. The new Exec is quite similar to the old exec - thanks Alistair (Chair), Rebekah (Treasurer) and Dave (Publicty and BBQs).

First Responder course

Darlington & District will be running a First Response Course on Sunday 9 July at Area Scout HQ, Neasham Road, Darlington.

The course will start at 9.30am and finish at approximately 4.00pm.

Cost is £9.00 for District members and £11.00 for Non-District members.

Although refreshments will be provided those attending may wish to bring a packed lunch.
Uniform is not required.

If anyone is interested in attending then can you please let me know asap.

Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award

The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award in now open! 11-17 year olds with a passion for words enter here: foyleyoungpoets.org. The deadline for entries is 31 July 2017. The top 100 poets receive a range of fantastic prizes, such as Poetry Society membership and a stack of books and poetry goodies. The Top 15 winners win mentoring and a life-changing residential writing course. All winners will be published: The top 15 in a print anthology which is distributed to thousands of schools, libraries and poetry enthusiasts, available to download; and the 85 commended poets in an online anthology available to view here. Good luck.

District AGM -25th June

Unfortunately the nature picnic on the 25th June has had to be cancelled but the AGM will still go ahead. In order to avoid clashing with too many other activities the AGM will start at 18.00 with business starting soon after 18.30, and will include a FREE BBQ. We will be hosting the AGM at Broom Park Picnic site unless the weather forecast is terrible (in which case we will retreat to Fram Scout Hut).

In order to avoid under catering please let me know if you are coming by Friday 23rd June - the invitation is of course open to everyone involved in Scouting in Durham City.

If anyone would like to volunteer to lead the BBQ that would also be much appreciated.

Cub Water Day

The annual Cub Water activity day is taking place on the 1st July.

We also still need volunteers to supervise the activities both on and off the water so if anyone is able to help please do let me know.

Roverway 2018 - Applications now Open

Roverway 2018 is an incredible European adventure for 16-22 year olds, due to be held in The Netherlands from 23rd July - 2nd August 2018, with a programme including:

A UK Contingent pre-event in Amsterdam
A five day 'Path' exploring The Netherlands in an international crew (which can be used towards DoE Gold/ Queen's Scout Residentials)
A five day Jamboree-style central camp with a wide range of adventurous activities.


Durham Scout County has recently been allocated one patrol of 6-8 members.
We are now looking for applications to join the Roverway patrol and represent Durham Scout County on an international stage with a closing date for applications of 31st July 2017. Please pass on this message to any Explorer Scouts, Young Leaders or Scout Network members and encourage them to consider applying.

Applicants must be born between the dates of 2nd August 1995 and 25th July 2002. The Patrol will be lead by a Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader who must be at aged 18-22 years old on 23rd July 2018.

If you have any questions about the event, please contact roverway@durhamscouts.org.uk in the first instance. We will also try and fulfil any requests from ESLs and Network Chairs to deliver presentations about the event to your members, if this is something you would find useful.

DESC Role

After a number of years in the District Explorer Scout Commissioner role Rich Williams has decided to return to his AESL role. I would like to thank Rich for his work in what has at times been a challenging position.

We will be looking to appoint a replacement as soon as possible so if you know someone who you think would be well suited to the role or would like to take it on your self please do let me know.

Large group bookings at Moor House

At its meeting on the 28th June, the Moor House Management Board (MHMB) will be considering how we can make it easier for districts and large groups to use Moor House for their large events.

I would be keen to hear from you if you have any strong views on how we might support you better? For example, would a different pricing structure or payment terms or activity choices help?

If you do have anything you'd like to share, I'd appreciate receiving it by Friday 23rd June.

DC search update

Unfortunately no one has been nominated for the Durham District Commissioner role. While I still need to speak with the County Commissioner please continue to direct all DC related queries to myself for the present time.

Durham City District Commissioner Search Process - Deadline this week

The process is open - anyone can be nominated or nominate themselves and all nominations will be considered by the search team. The form is simple – basic details and then a justification – why you are nominating this person, or for a self-nominee, why you think you are suitable to take on the job.
There are a number of reasons why people don’t nominate, including
• the job is too big,
• possibility of losing touch with the young people,
• having to deal with things like safeguarding and complaints,
There is a lot to the DC role and so there is the possibility of ‘team DC’ where two or three people share the role; alternatively, Deputy DCs can be appointed to take on some aspects of the role (in the same way that the county is appointing Dep CCs to take on parts of the CC role).
Whoever takes on the role will be supported by the CC and the regional support team who will do the initial induction; existing DCs will also provide help, advice and support.
I will also work with whoever is appointed to get them through Getting Started and to explain the rest of the training.
The timescale is:
• Search Process runs: 22nd May – 10th June
• Search Team draws up shortlist and agree questions: 12th -18th June
• Interviews: 19th June – 1st July
• AAC Meeting: W/C 26th June
So, please either self-nominate or nominate someone else in the District you think could make an effective District Commissioner. You might also like to consider people who are not ‘at the coal-face’, who have perhaps stepped back for a while, or who are on the periphery, and have expertise from their day job, perhaps.
I’d be happy to answer any queries people have.

1st Response Course

Dave Kelsey will be running a 1st Response course at Staindrop scout hut on Saturday 17th June from 9am-4pm. Please could you forward this to any leaders who need to attend the course and get back to me with names asap. Apologies for short notice. Cost of course is £20 per person.

Introduction to Residential Experiences (Module 16) – Thursday 29 June 2017


Durham Scout County’s Training Team will be delivering Module 16 of the Adult Training Scheme on Thursday 29 June from 7:30pm at Moor House.

If you wish to undertake this module and can commit to the date, applications need to be made by 7:30pm on Thursday 15 June via www.durhamscouts.org.uk/mytools.

If you do not have an assigned Training Adviser, please record 'No TA' in the relevant field.

Nights away advisor

If anyone is interested in taking on a Nights Away Adviser role please speak to myself or Richard in the first instance

We've decided to run two courses: one on July 8, 9-12, in Thirsk, at County Office, if it's free (otherwise in Boroughbridge); and another on July 22, 9-12, in York, at a venue provided by John McCarthy (this course being intended for York leaders, on the whole)

Some of you will need to do an hour or so of 'pre-course' work to cover the core of Module 25; but many of you have already validated Mod 25 in the past, as managers or TAs. I'll let you have a relevant PPT that covers the content: mainly assessing and giving feedback
