Beamish are hosting their annual traditional go cart building competition on the 29th-31st August (separate competition each day). The activity is free but entry to the museum has to be paid for. More Info

School Production of We Will Rock You

Framwellgate School have asked me to publicise their upcoming show:

The show is being held here in school (Framwellgate School Durham) from Wednesday 3rd July – Saturday 6th July, doors open at 7.00pm and the show will finish at approximately 9.45pm.

Some of your scouts are in the actual production of the show so I am sure that the team would really enjoy coming to see them perform. Tickets are available now. Prices start at £3.00 for the Wednesday evening and £4.50 for the reminder of the show. However we are doing group discounts over 4 or more tickets and group leaders attend for free.

Mental Health / Suicide Awareness Training

MIND are offering free awareness training - this is particularly relevant to adults working with scout and explorer scout sections. Courses are free, but a £50 non-attendance fee is charged if you don't show!

Moving Picture License

You may be received various communication about needing a Moving Picture License to show films at a camp or on a Scout night. The good news is County are in the process of arrange this at a County level - so no need to worry about it!

CRB Changes

For information only:
In future if an adults CRB check has any adverse information Gilwell will contact the individual concerned to ask them to return their copy of the completed CRB disclosure to Gilwell before the appointment can proceed.
This is a change brought in by the government not the Scout Association.

Ian Johnson MBE

I am pleased to announce that Ian Johnson (DC for Bishop Auckland) has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2013.

The award is in recognition of his work with Department for Work and Pensions and for his contribution to Scouting in Durham Scout County.


Cuboree Staff Team

Cubboree is coming up soon on the 21st-23rd June. It's going to be the biggest ever with over 800 people joining us for a weekend inspired by Bear Grylls - there's survival, high ropes and the exclusive Nintendo 3DS Zone.

We're on the look out for a brilliant staff team to help run Activities (such as climbing, archery, etc), Site Services, First Aid and Helpdesk/Security.

District Faith Picnic

This years District Faith Picnic is on July 14th and the theme is 'The Lindisfarne Gospels'.
It will be family based fun for Scouts of all ages (it has previously been very popular with Beavers and Cubs) - Bring your own picnic.
Meet at Broompark 10.30am with the picnic starting at 12.30 and concluding about 13.00.
Everyone welcome.

Waterhouses Giant Cub Litter Pick

As part of Scout Community Week 2013 Waterhouses Cubs completed a giant litter pick - well done.

County Safeguarding Update


Group Executive Induction and Training

As part of the District program supporting the Group executives we have arranged a Group Exec Induction Evening on the 4th July for all exec members.

The evening (7.15-9pm) will cover:

AA forms if needed - exec members to bring necessary documentation
The role of the group exec
Financial responsibilities and liabilities as trustees
M1 training as relevant to exec members (including validation)
Experience sharing
Q & A

The aim will be to make sure all exec members understand their role and get the various exec members talking to each other and sharing good practice.
All new and old exec members are strongly encouraged to come along - the more participants we have the more useful the evening will be for all concerned.

First Aid Course Reminder

The District first aid team will be running a 1st Responder course on the 29th June. All leaders, helpers and Explorers very welcome.

County Appointments

I am delighted to announce that Dave Porteous has been appointed as District Commissioner for Gateshead, effective 1 June 2013. Dave takes over from Peter Crawley, who is stepping down because he has completed the maximum 10 year period permitted for the DC role. Peter will continue in a GSL role.
I wish both Dave and Peter well in their roles, and I am sure you will all offer Dave the support he needs as he finds his way in this new challenge.

I am also delighted to confirm, as announced at the District AGMs that I have attended, that Gill Forth has accepted the role of Assistant County Commissioner (Scouts). This appointment is already effective, and again I am sure Gill will receive all the support she needs as she settles into the County Team.

Quest Lodge are hosting a social evening

Quest Lodge are hosting a social evening starting 7.30pm on Friday the 28th of June at Chester-Le-street Golf Club. The aim of the night is to raise monies associated with helping local Scouting as part of Freemasonry in the Community. This night is open to Masons and non-Masons alike, attire will be casual, there is a brilliant act on by the name of the Haley Sisters who play Country, Folk, Blues & good old Rock n Roll. For only £10 a ticket you get a buffet, entertainment and a chance to make a difference by raising money for a good cause.
