Sad news - Ian Cooper

Evening everyone (received yesterday)

I am sure some of you will be aware but I have just picked up Greg`s e mail about Ian C and is with deepest sadness that I have to say that Ian passed away this morning, after his immensely courageous battle with his illness. As and when I am aware of any funeral arrangements I will pass them on.

I will arrange a note to be put on the County website.

My thoughts and prayers are with Janet, James and Joanne.

Cat’s Protection League Visits

We had a fantastic and very informative visit from the Cat’s Protection League last night.

Our Beavers found it fascinating and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Due to popularity, I would advise that you contact her well in advance to secure bookings and would highly recommend doing so.

Just a quick reminder that the latest version of the TA guide is dated Jan 2016.

If any TAs are still using older versions, the county will provide hard copies for those who need them (many TAs use the on-line versions anyway).

If you need a new printed copy please let John know by the 30th May.

Leaders also need to make sure they're using the latest version of the training guide.

Sunderland District Scout Shop

As the Durham County Shop is currently closed we have been asked by the County Team to pass on details of District shops where leaders can purchase uniform and badges, etc. to be circulated to your leaders.

We are open on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm, we accept orders by email at any other times and are happy to post your orders to you (actual postage costs incurred). There is a badge order form for leaders to use on our website:- http://www.sunderlandscouts.org.uk/scout%20shop.html

Our shop is situated at 9 Foyle Street, Sunderland City Centre, SR1 1LB.

We are happy to consider accounts for leaders and accept payment by cash or cheque.

Many thanks

District Growth

I've just received the results back from this years census and I'm very pleased to be able to report that we've now grown to become the biggest District in the County, we have more
Beavers, Scouts and Explorers than any other District and we missed out on the Cubs crown by a single Cub!
We've also had good growth across all sections which is fantastic news and a testament to the hard work of everyone in the District.
The flip side is we also have some of the biggest waiting lists particularly for the youngest sections.

District AGM -13th June

The District AGM will take place again in the Teikyo University library on the
13th June, starting at 7pm.

A number of the Scouts who attended the jamboree will be talking to us about their trip.

It's very important that groups support the District Exec and as in previous years we would like one non uniformed nomination from each Group. This can be in addition to a role on the Group Exec.

Holiday Homes Trust

I have been asked to circulate this newsletter from the Holiday Homes Trust

Introducing the Four Week Challenge - Making volunteering easy

An open ended volunteering commitment can be a scary thing. For parents and other potential volunteers who might not know much about Scouting, agreeing to volunteer in itself can be a huge leap. They’re unsure whether they will enjoy it; they may well feel out of their comfort zone and might be equally worried about letting the leader down.

That’s why the new Four Week Challenge, being piloted in some parts of the UK by the Regional Development Service, is such a proving such an interesting experiment. It is a time specific volunteering commitment for those interested in supporting young people, staggered, as the name suggests, over four weeks.

There are also posters and flyers available to customise to your group in the Printcentre area on the website. These can be customised to add in your own contact details and program.

Auckland Castle

I am the Community Outreach Officer for Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland.

I am already working with Jane Jacobs and the St Helens Cub Scouts in Bishop Auckland but I would like to reach out to all scouting groups in County Durham and invite you to get involved with the exciting things that are happening in Bishop Auckland. I would like to offer Auckland Castle as a resource to you and all of your groups- we can offer fun packed activity days, a badge fulfilment day, overnight camping and tell you all about the regenerative project.

I don’t know if you are aware, but there is an incredible regeneration project happening here at Auckland Castle, which creates a unique opportunity for our heritage site; its future is as exciting as its past.

The Castle is closing for refurbishment this September- (we will still be open at weekend so people can come and see the developments as they happen!) and it would be great if your groups were able to come and see the before and after.

If any of this is of interest of you and you would like to meet to discuss this further, or arrange a free, tailor made visit, I would be happy to help.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch,
Thanks and Best Wishes,

Alison Tweddle
Community Outreach Officer

Congratulations to Fram Cubs

All the teams in the Pete Swinney Competition did really well yesterday especially 1st Staindrop, and a fun day was had by all. However after a recount, we were delighted to find out that 1st Framwellgate Moor Tuesday Cubs were joint first place winners. Unfortunately, the trophy had already been awarded and photographs taken at this point. We are to share the Shield with 1st Staindrop, and the Cubs who took part will receive their County Neckers at the Awards ceremony later this year.

County Beaver Picnic

Just a reminder that booking for the picnic closes this week (14th - or earlier if it fills up). Book via the county website:

Cubs 100 Regional Necker Challenge

Hi All

Thank you to all those who have already submitted neckers. We are still short of a lot of neckers, whilst the deadline has passed we would still like to get the best return possible and as the Regional deadline has been posponed we would like to give you another opportunity to take part.

It would be a great achievement if as part of Cubs 100 we could get every necker in the county. I know thats going to be a lot of sewing but we can do it and then we want to get as much publicity as we can with as many Cubs as we can involved.

If you are intending to take part can you please get neckers to us at the Pete Swinney on 7 May if at all possible or post them to me.

I have this week received an anonymous parcel of neckers which look like a whole district. Can you please let me know if this was you!

Just a reminder we require 2 signed neckers from each pack in a group. If you have a group badge please add that too.

Thank you
