Scouts take over the Market Place

Thank you to everyone who attended our St George's celebration yesterday. We had a fantastic turnout and filled the market place for our inspection by the mayor.

A particular thank you is due to the Faith Committee for their hard work pulling everything together.

Support is welcome. Our next meeting is September 2nd and anyone who wishes to work with us is very welcome. Please contact Kim.

We would also welcome suggestions of venues within our district with space for 200+ inside and - even better - space outside that can safely be used as a parade area.We would like to continue our policy of visiting all areas of our district where groups are represented.
Once again, thanks!

Junior Songs of Praise

Junior Songs of Praise is going ahead. The details are HERE.

In addition (from the organisers)...

While there's no specific age limits on the event, it's aimed at primary age children and their families. The organisers want to ensure the majority of those attending are children and families. The event may not be suitable for large groups of older adults!

Note you'll need a ticket to attend – details are on the poster. Please state whether the ticket is for a child or an adult. We rely on ticket bookings to know how many people are coming so please don't block-book tickets unless you have definite numbers committed.

Many thanks

David Potts

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of our District President David Potts.
David was for a good number of years our District Chairman before taking on the role of President and was involved at County being a member of the Finance Committee.
Before this he has gone through life as a proud Scout and attended a couple of Jamboree’s as well as seeing Baden Powell presented with the Rolls Royce that the Scouts bought for him.
His funeral will be held next week sometime and I will inform you as soon as I find out the particulars.
Alan Mangles.

First world war: led session available

Durham University Library and Heritage Collection’s Learning Team are offering an exciting new session for local scouting troops from October 2014 until January 2015 to tie in with an exhibition entitled “Books for Boys”. The exhibition considers pre-war literature and the wider cultural context, including the early Scouting movement, and the impact it had on boys and young men ahead of the Great War. Using the exhibition as a basis we will explore the differences and similarities between Scouts now and in the pre-1914 period.

The session will include:
• The chance to play the same games as played in the pre-war period

• The opportunity to examine the differences between in uniform and badges then and now, including each Scout making their own badge in the process.

• A trail around the galleries, allowing the Scouts to look at the books and toys that they may have read and played with 100 years ago

• An opportunity to look at what the Scouts or Scout Leader who joined up to fight would have faced by interacting with our First World War handling collection

• The session will finish with an activity focusing on remembrance with each Scout making a poppy to add to a troop wreath.

The workshop costs £40 plus £1.50 per Scout (all accompanying adults free of charge) and lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours.

For those not able to visit the exhibition, we offer an outreach service where the Team visits you. This session is similar in content, however the gallery trial is replaced with an alternative activity focusing on the facsimiles from the ones display in the exhibition. Outreach visits cost £1.50 per Scout.

If you would like to book a session or have any enquires please email me directly on j.h.aspinall@durham.ac.uk or email the Learning Team at 4schools@durham.ac.uk

Many thanks

County safeguarding update:

Information has been passed on to me that some children playing the popular online game, Movie Star Planet have been sent obscene messages by adults posing as children within the game. More details can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-26784801

I’m sure you are aware that incidents such as this are not limited to Movie Star Planet, but can happen anywhere online where communication can take place.

It may be helpful if you could pass this information on to parents along with a reminder of these simple steps which can help ensure Internet safety for the young people:

1. Check which online games and social media apps your children use.

2. Ensure you and your child know how to report and/or block if any inappropriate activity is witnessed.

3. Dependent on age, parental supervision is paramount when your child is online.

4. Ensure your child knows that he/she can come to you if they see or hear anything that upsets them

Request from Jamboree Fundraising Team

The Scouts/Explorers fundraising for the Jamboree would be extremely grateful for donations of prizes for the raffle they will be running at the District AGM. All prizes big or small would be welcome.
Please email claire@framscouts.org.uk to let us know what you will be bringing along.
