Great to so see so many young people and leaders at the St George's service. The collection raised £118 for 'British Youth for Christ, Durham' who run a mentoring scheme to support troubled young people.

Many Thanks,

Heritage Open Days- September

The Heritage Open Days are being held on the 12th - 15th September and there are many ways in which local communities can engage with this - from opening a special building in their area, to putting on a heritage focussed exhibition or event, to attending the various activities on offer over the long weekend. I have attached a sheet of information.

Ros Evans (Heritage Outreach and Learning Officer) is coordinating the events and his details are below. He is very happy to meet with groups for a discussion. If you or any other groups you are aware of are interested in getting involved please contact Ros direct.

Congratulations to Asher Smith who is taking on the role of DUSAGG (Durham University Scout and Guide Group) President - he can be contacted on:

County Network Meeting

Hello all.

I am now getting to grips with my new role as CSNC and, being aware of the number of Network evolutions and various opinions from around the County, I have decided to try another fresh start.

To get things out in the open, and perhaps dispel some myths, I have arranged an open forum night on :-

Wednesday 8th May 19.30 at Moor House (Uniform preferred but optional).

I intend to use the evening to highlight what Network actually is and how I see the future of the section in Durham, at least until the results of the National review towards the end on 2014. There will also be a link to DofE awards.

I have attached a new Network introduction document for your interest. I have no doubt I will have missed one or two things, but it’s a start. It would be helpful if you could read it and pass on to anyone you may feel it will be helpful to.

If you are a Network member, want to have a Network, have any interest or connection to Network, have questions, or are just generally interested in what’s going on, please come along and spread the word to anyone else you may think this affects.

I would love to get as many people along as possible to spread the word directly so that we can try to support Scouting for our 18-25 year olds, who are the future.

It would be great if you could come, so please pop this date into your diary, spread the word, and drop me a reply if possible so that I know you are coming.

Thanks for your support.

David Holmes CSNC

Games to help manage behaviour

I am helping with a HQ project on managing behaviour, especially strategies for encouraging positive behaviour. We have loads of ideas but are short on games and activities that help encourage positive behaviour, so if you have any ideas to share with me I would appreciate it.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

ACC Scouts

John Moore had previously let me know that he wished to stand down from the ACC (Scouts) role, to focus his energy and commitment within Teesdale District. This change has now been made, so I thank John for his time and effort in the County role over the last three years, and wish him every success in his new challenges.

Looking ahead, I expect to make an ACC (Scouts) appointment within the next two weeks, and a meeting of ADCs will then be called.
In the meantime, Steve Purnell has agreed to organise the 2013 Dryburn Cup, and he will issue the relevant details shortly.

New Leaders

I would like to welcome the following new leaders, and ask everyone to support them through the appointments process and their initial training.

Stephanie Huntley at 4th Durham as Assistant Beaver Scout Leader
Paula Prest at 17th Durham (Coxhoe) as Group Sectional Assistant
Callum Ternent at 5th Durham City as Assistant Scout Leader

Gang Show in a Day

There will be an inital meeting at 7.15pm on Thursday 18th April at Fram Scout Hut to discuss:
- date (~ February 2014)
- venues
- roles
- plan for pulling the whole thing together

If you can't make the meeting but are interest in getting involved either in the planning or on the day itself then please email claire@framscouts.org.uk

2013 Awards Event

Details for Awards 2013 are now available on the website at >
www.durhamscouts.org.uk/awards2013, along with the online nomination form.

Following the success of last years event, the format of the event is mostly unchanged. Again, it is not designed to replace local presentations, but is an opportunity for award holders to meet together, celebrate their achievements and feel part of the bigger movement.

The date of the event has changed from that previously advertised, to the 10th November and the venue will be advised nearer the time - we are looking at a number of options. The deadline for nominations is the 1st October.

I attach the letter and paper nomination form which shall be going out in the post to GSL's/Group Contacts/DESC's within the next 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, I would be grateful if you could circulate around your District and encourage the leaders of anyone who has received or will be receiving an award to register for Awards 2013.
