Explorer District Bowling

Last Monday over 40 Explorers met to compete in the Durham City Explorer 10 pin bowling competition. Congratulations to Jack and Gee for taking the coveted trophies and Easter eggs back to Elvet. It was a really successful evening, with all of the units together, definitely an event to repeat next year.

1st Belmont Gliding weekend

1st Belmont had a gliding weekend at the Yorkshire Gliding Centre and everyone who took part really enjoyed themselves.

We had 12 Scouts take part and the 6 on Saturday were the lucky ones as they got up into the air, either by being towed by the plane or catapulted by the winch.

Saturday was a long day as it was plagued by bad weather and rain and there was a lot of stop starting and just as our ASL Andy Woods was about to get his turn, the day was stopped as heavy persistant rain came in. Never mind at least he got to clean a glider, wear a parachute and sit in one. Better luck next time when we return.

Our Sunday contingent of 6 Scouts had to wait to lunchtime before they were told there would be no outdoor flights, but we're compensated by a quick go at a glider simulator. Today was apparently too windy and after the most experienced pilot on site went for a test flight the outdoor gliding was cancelled.

His reasoning was 'it was like flying in a washing machine up there!!' Health and Safety first all the time!

(Note that the youth member selection will not start until the autumn of 2017 and IST members will not be selected until early 2018).

As an update, we haven't yet received a bursary offer from the Sir John Priestman Trust for the sailing this year, but we are still hopeful it will appear.
To that end, you should have seen messages go out via Facebook and I have emailed 200 members via compass today, as below.

Please ensure all members are aware of this opportunity.

We are hopeful that once again, the Sir John Priestman Charity Trust will kindly offer to fund one place on a Tall Ships Adventure for 2017. This is an amazing opportunity and well worth thinking about for all 18-24 year old's in Scout Network. If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please download and return the nomination form, available via the County Network GROUP, to me (email address on form) by no later than 17.00 on Friday 31/3/17. To be considered, you must be a member of Scout Network in Durham County, being the youth provision for this age range, and be available for a selection interview should it be required. If applications are limited, a small group will endeavour to select via paper sift to speed up the process and allow a greater choice of sailing opportunities. Please get in touch with me directly (not via this group) if you have any questions.

County Scout Network Commissioner

St Georges Day

Unfortunaetly the District St George's Day service, due to a clash of dates has been cancelled for this event.

There should be a parade included in the SGM and Nature Picnic on Sunday 25th June 2017 - 11am-3pm

Using Moor House

It's great to see lots of districts and groups continuing to use Moor House for their events and evening programmes - excluding County events, we've welcomed over 5000 Durham Scout members between April and December 2016. You'll be pleased to know that despite rising costs, the Moor House Management Board remain committed to allowing site access for free.

However, we are increasingly finding that some districts and groups do not just need site access but need assistance with the running of their event. Examples include layby access, towing of trailers, rubbish collection, wood deliveries, power distribution and access to equipment stored at Moor House. All of this is fine but needs to be arranged in advance by liaising with the team at Moor House, as we can't guarantee that there will be a member of staff on-site during your event.

I'd be grateful if you could circulate and if you have any questions, please let me know.

Ian Hammond

County Practical Skills Workshops

In response to your feedback, we are organising practical skills workshops on the 24th June 2017 at Moor House. From fire lighting to tent pitching, we've designed a flexible day to help you gain the essential practical skills you told us you needed to be able to pass them onto your young people.
Sign up for a County Practical Skills Workshop - 24th June 2017

Each of our half-day sessions will run in both the morning and the afternoon, with the following zones:

Backwoods Zone - Knife & axe, fire lighting and backwoods cooking
Survival Zone - Knife & axe and survival skills
Pioneering Zone - Knots, lashings and pioneering
Camping Zone - Erecting tents and campsite layout
Permit Zone - Climbing (including crate stacking) assessment (for AAP permit) and basic navigation skills

Each module will be adapted on the day based on participants prior learning and will not only teach the skills, but also the techniques you can use to teach your young people. All modules are suitable for all leaders, regardless of your section.

You can find out more on the Practical Skill Workshop page on the County website
