Reading Offer(?)

Please note - this message is not endorsed by anyone - so please proceed accordingly

Hi my name is Laura Armstrong and I am the owner of Incy Wincy readers as an independent usborne organiser . I was wondering if you are having a summe fete this year and would like to invite me along to hold a stall of the lovely usborne books for parents to purchase. I understand there may be a charge for this and would welcome that.

I can also offer free story sessions or a sponsored readathon to raise free books for the group .

Alternatively if you would just be happy for me to pop along to your groups one week just to hold a stall for parents and children please get in touch

Many thanks
Laura Armstrong

Use of Scout Adventurous Activity Permits at Moor House

I have received a long email detailing various aspects of using Scout AAPs at Moor House. The most useful part is (subject to various steps being put in place):

'In simple terms, we will be clarifying how Scouters may lead Scouting activities at Moor House, including how Leaders with suitable climbing and archery AAPs may use Moor House facilities after a suitable site orientation. Once this is finalised we will communicate again so that your members are clear about the processes to be followed and their responsibilities when leading activities at Moor House.'

Late applications for Training modules

You will be aware that there has been a delay in the appointment of a new CTM and CTA and the current 'training team' who are managing training within the county are finding the admin of joining instructions, course lists etc too time consuming, given everything else they are doing.

It has therefore been decided to move shortly to automated joining instructions which will be sent to all leaders who have applied for modules, just after the closing date (currently two weeks before).

This means that it will not be possible to take late applications, because this cannot be administered through the current on-line system. The two weeks between applications closing and the course running is to give trainers time to prepare, order handouts etc; late applications have already caused some difficulty for trainers who have run courses so far this year as well as to the team who need to send out additional info, alter lists etc.

The adherence to the closing date will take effect from Module 17/23 session, with the deadline of 7pm on 31st March being strictly adhered to. Any withdrawals before the deadline of an event should be done through the booking system. We ask that any withdrawals after the deadline are sent to the training@durhamscouts.org.uk mailbox.

ACC Cubs

Hi Folks

As most of you will be aware by now I received news a couple of weeks ago that my cancer has returned and I am in need of further treatment. At this moment in time I am not sure what that is going to entail as plans seem to be changing daily. I am determined to carry on with the ACC role as long as possible until I need to take a break while any treatment is ongoing.

In order to ensure that the role is covered Richard and I have decided to appoint a team of ADCs to act as Assistant ACCs. The gang of four are:

Sarah Dodds - Durham City
Anne Gordon - Crook and Weardale
Lesley Robinson - Sunderland
Gemma Younghusband - Houghton le Spring

Ian Hammond is arranging for the cubs email to be redirected so it comes to all five of us. Richard will obviously decide how he wants to arrange things for County Team meetings as we probably wouldn't want to have everyone present but i will leave that to him if I am unable to attend.

On a personal note I would like to thank everyone for the kind messages of support that Janet and I have received. I was always aware that the likelihood of the cancer returning was high due to the type I have but it obviously comes as a shock and the support I have received helps enormously.

Food Hygiene Course

Moor House have secured some free courses for employees or volunteers (of Durham Scouts - should be doing 8 hours per week).

Criteria 19+, Cannot be in FT Education and UK Resident

The Course I have Opted For is:
Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering Qualification Overview The Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering (QCF) is a qualification aimed at caterers and other food handlers.

The qualification is intended for learners already working in catering and those who are preparing to work in the industry.

Learners gaining this qualification will know that food safety is the responsibility of everyone involved in the storage, preparation, cooking service and handling of food.

Its topics are regarded by the Foods Standards Agency as being important to maintaining good practice in the production of safe food. Entry Requirements There are no prerequisites for this qualification.

I can get 12 people on a course but can run the course as many times as I like with a different set of people (course minimum is 8).

I have 7 so far for course one (Dates TBC - 1 Day Course).

If you are interested or any of your group are interested in a) filling up spaces on course one or b) arranging a second course please let me know.

Joint movie night and pioneering with Fram and Belmont Scouts

A number of Belmont Scouts took part in a joint movie night and sleep over with Fram Scouts over the weekend and then had a full day of pioneering on the Saturday. In all there were around 40 Scouts taking part and everyone mixed in and had a really good weekend.

We watched three good movies on the Friday, along with making pop corn and pizzas and after an early start on Saturday spent the day pioneering and playing games. Everyone who took part had a good time and in the end the Scouts made a giant swing and watch tower.
