I'd just like to say a very big Thank You to Ken, Kieren, Sarah, Angela and Claire for helping David and Vic with Wednesday Scouts last week while I was not well. Thanks also to all the other people who offered to help out. It was great that the District could come to the rescue - Thank you all so much.

Cub 6 a side Football

Congratulations to our newest Cubs Pack Coxhoe for winning the District Cub Football. It was a very tight competition with the final score being a draw. Rules state that if we have a draw that the winner is decided on Goal difference. Coxhoe won by a difference of 1 Goal. Congratulations to Fram (Tuesday) who were a very close runner up. Well done to all the Cub teams who took part, they all played really well. We had an excellent turn out with almost 50 Cubs taking part. All in the good spirit of Scouting teams pulled together to make up numbers where teams were short.

Wig Wednesday (22nd May)

Dear Durham Scouts,

I am writing to invite scouts from across Durham to take part in CLIC Sargent’s national fund raising event Wig Wednesday. The event takes place on Wednesday 22nd May and we are asking groups to wear a wig at their meetings to raise awareness of childhood cancer and raise funds by asking for a small donation to CLIC Sargent.

To take part you will need to register at www.clicsargent.org.uk/wigwednesday and we will then send you a simple fund raising pack with ideas, an event guide and how to pay your money in.

Every day, 10 families in the UK hear the shocking news their child has cancer. CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people and their families. We provide clinical, practical and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life.

Please do see the attached document for more information and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Regards,
Caroline Ormiston

National Census results

The basic national Census results have now been collated, and I am delighted to say that not only are we the fastest growing County in the North East Region, but we have also grown significantly faster than the national average.
The headline increases in membership are:
Durham County: Youth +5.4% Adult +4.8% Overall +5.3%
NE Region: Youth +1.2% Adult +3.2% Overall +1.6%
National: Youth +1.7% Adult +2.8% Overall +1.9%

My thanks and congratulations to all of you for the part you have played in our County's growth. I will be grateful if you will pass this positive news on to your Districts, Groups and Sections, and please congratulate and thank Leaders, Executive Committee members and other adult supporters on my behalf.

Regards,
Jeff

Newcastle Scout Gang Show

The Newcastle Scout Gang Show runs 2nd-6th April

Louis Robdrup

I am afraid that Louis Robdrup passed away on Sunday 10 March.

Louis did not hold a role within the District but may have been known to some.

Louis’ formal service was as ASL and CSL with 1st Newcastle from 1964 to 1988 (apart from a four year break as ADC (Venture Scouts) 1984-86). In 1988 he joined the Scout Fellowship and then moved into City of Newcastle (Red Scarf) Scout Active Support Unit.

As part of that Unit he was involved in the organisation of the BP Walk, indeed one of his Scout Active Support colleagues noted that it was “solely Louis's idea and inspiration”. In February 2012, the District Cub Scouts – 100 of them – undertook the BP Walk, led by members of the City of Newcastle (Red Scarf) Scout Active Support Unit. Louis made sure he was there even though he was unable to participate in the walk itself due to illness.

My understanding is that there will be a committal at Whitley Bay Crematorium on Tuesday 26 March at noon.

Photography Competiton

Following on from our telephone conversation, I thought that some of the young people you work with would be interested in a national photographic competition being run by Road Safety GB for budding photographers to support the Second UN Global Road Safety Week (6 to 12 May) and its theme of pedestrian safety.

The competition , called ‘Footprints’, is open to young people aged 11 to 18 years and requires competitors to snap away on the theme of pedestrian safety. The competition launched on Monday 4th March and runs until Sunday 21 April.
