Shakespeare Trust Funding

The district will be looking to approach the Shakespeare Trust later this year to see if they are able to continue their valuable support of our activities. If you have an idea that requires a bit of financial support on behalf of your Section, Group or the District as a whole please speak to your GSL or the DC.

Disclosure Checking

I have now receive an email from HQ to initiate DBS checks on those adults (3 in total) whose DBS checks have expired. I have passed this information on to the relevant GSLs. At this stage unfortunately there's still no way of checking new adults.

Founders Day

A big thank you to Elsa for organising our Founders Day service - good to see so many Scouts and Scouters in attendance

The St George's day service will be held at the RC Church in Langley Moor on the 26th April

Mandatory Safeguarding Training

Dear all, as you will be aware, leaders must complete approved safeguarding training at least every five years. Therefore, those people who did this training 5 or more years ago need to re-do it.

The next session is on Tuesday 10th March from 7:00-9:00 at Moor House with booking via the county website https://www.durhamscouts.org.uk/booking/training/courses.php?type=safeguarding

Online training is also acceptable

Stop Look Listen: National Safeguarding Day February 27th

#StopLookListen15 is a national safeguarding day, organised by National Council of Voluntary Youth Services. It is an opportunity for all children and youth organisations to take positive action to improve their safeguarding practices. On Friday 27 February we want groups to Stop what they are doing, Look at their safeguarding practices and Listen to young people, empowering them to take an active role in managing their own safety.

Here’s three quick things you can do to help make #StopLookListen15 a huge success.

Make a pledge.
Tell us. Then tell the world.
Encourage others to sign up!

Check out our toolkit if you need any more support or let me know if you want to know more.

Durham County Scout Shop

Durham Scout County is now staffing the County Scout shop with volunteers while the role of paid shop staff is being reviewed (as with paid staff the shop is making a loss). The County are looking for volunteers going forward including a shop co-ordinator.

If you are interested please contact John Moore (let me know if you need contact details).

The latest update I have had on Compass suggests (to me) that Compass is not going to be fixed any time soon.

Hopefully everyone managed to take a snap shot of their membership numbers over the weekend - hopefully some official forms will appear soon to allow us to pass them up the tree.

Compass Update

Some of you will have received the HQ update on Compass late last week. It seems that the problems are severe enough that HQ are now making contingency plans for the census, and DBS checks for new and established leaders. Clearly this is disappointing and I would suggest means they're not expecting Compass to be operational again for a while.

Due to the problems with Compass HQ seem to be reverting to a traditional head count census. The date in question is the 15th Feb (THIS SUNDAY) - I am expecting paper work to come out in the next few days - but what ever happens please ensure you know and make a record of how many young people and leaders are in each section this weekend.

Training module matrix

The updated training module matrix can now be found HERE

Module 22 has gone and module 12 has been split into two halves.

Programme Updates

In order to prepare you further for the major update to the Programme the ACCs have prepared a workshop for all Leaders, Helpers and Young Leaders in the Beaver, Cub and Scout Sections. (David is dealing with the changes to the Explorer Section separately) and Network is is still in the process of being reviewed.

We are delighted that Graeme Hamilton, the Deputy UK Commissioner for Programme has agreed to join us and help deliver the workshops. I am therefore certain that these will be highly informative and entertaining as no-one in the Country is as well qualified to talk on this subject since he has been heavily involved in the preparation of the updates for the last few years.

The workshops are being repeated four times over the weekend of 28th February/1st March at Waldridge Fell Village Hall. For further details and to book you place visit http://www.durhamscouts.org.uk/update2015/.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to get in touch

County AGM Papers

The papers from the '2014' County AGM are available:

Coxhoe Cubs do Healthwatch

We had Belinda Tweed from Healthwatch who listened to the Cubs' experiences at doctors, dentists and hospitals. They each got a little something to take away. On the same night we had the Fire Service there with a talk about fire safety and a look round the fire engine. Busy night! Last week we had a geocaching walk round the village with our Scout pack which was great, really muddy and excellent to get out with maps and torches in the dark.

Belinda Tweed is looking for some other packs to visit so if anyone wants to get in touch - you had her details in your weekly news a few weeks ago!
