New leader appointments

The District Appointments Team have updated their approach to approving new appointments. Groups are still responsible for making sure new adults are added to Compass but the District Appointments secretary will now request any references required.

2017/18 Gliding Dates

The County pays a portion of the cost for our share of the Glider to make it so cheap for us to use.
Please take advantage of it....I'd like to see all our slots filled with Durham Scouts in the air.

Coves House Campsite and venue

Please note, I have not been to this venue and do not endorse it - I'm just passing on the info!

I wanted to tell you about our facilities which I think would really suit the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers.

We are based 2 miles outside of Wolsingham on a 60 acre farm. Our land includes 20 acres of woodland which is great for exploring and collecting fire wood for the camp fire in the tent site. This is 1/2 acre of grassland with its own loo block, obstacles to play on and lots of space to pitch tents.

We also have an Event Venue which has a large space, great for kids to run around in and play indoor games. The Event Venue includes a fully equip kitchen, changing rooms, showers and a comfy chill out room. We also have two bedroom with bunk beds in, one room can sleep 8 and the other room sleeps 4.

Feel free to give me a call on 07917 835 254 and come and have a look round.
Kind regards

St Georges Day

Unfortunately St George's Day falls on the last Sunday of the Easter holidays and in the past we have had a poor turn out on this day. Due to other activities the following weeks these are not viable so I am proposing that instead we have the service on Sunday April 9th, 2 weeks before and the first Sunday of the school holidays.
If anyone has a strong opinions or can see any problems with this date then please let me (Elsa Smith) know by next Sunday, 29th January, and I will confirm the date next week.

Census Reminder

Jan 31st is the Scouts annual census date - please make sure all you adult records (including Group Executive Committees) are on Compass by this date. Youth number will be collected as previously- GSLs have the required details to access the system.

Mandatory safeguarding training

Just a reminder that we all need to undertake safeguarding training at least every 5 years as part of our ongoing learning commitment – this can be done face-to-face or on-line. Leaders who completed the training on-line last time around and are now due to repeat it should do a face-to-face course. The next training course will be on Monday 27th February from 7:00pm to 9:15pm at Moor House and applications are via the county website.

New Activity Rule Changes

A number of rules have been updated covering in particualr: Gorge Walking, Swimming, joint Explorer and Network nights away, sailing, snow sports and visits abroad:

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Stephen Ramsay and/or myself

County Satisfaction Survey

We have initiated a County satisfaction survey so that members can tell us what support they need from the County, tell us what they think of our current support and whether they think this represents value for money. Please encourage everyone to fill it in at https://goo.gl/forms/NgziHGQNOil3lSfy2 (the survey will close at the end of January and we have around 9% of our membership who have responded so far).

County Committee Meeting Minutes Online

Minutes from December 2016's County Executive Committee meeting are now available on the Governance page on the County website. HERE

As part of the move towards greater openness in the County we are now posting minutes of the Executive Committee meetings on this page, which you can view at any time (we will not be sending e-mails out for future meeting minutes, but please feel free to check at any time).

County Scout Council meeting

There is a County Scout Council meeting (8th March 2017), which will be open to ALL members of Durham Scout County. This will be a chance for members to obtain updates on what County are doing to support them and it will also be an opportunity for our members to ask questions, raise concerns and make suggestions.

Four Week Challenge

Because an open-ended volunteering commitment can be a scary thing, the Four Week Challenge gives potential volunteers who might not know much about Scouting a taster of what it's all about.
