County Commissioner Appointment Process

As many of you will know Durham Scout County is in the process of appointing a new County Commissioner (to replace Jeff). The role is undoubtedly a challenging one where management skills are more important than knot tying.

I do have some further information I can forward on if you are considering nominating yourself or someone else.

Gibside Stables Open Day

My name is Susan Reece and I as well as being a Cub Scout Leader in Whickham, Gateshead, I am also a Volunteer with The National Trust at The Gibside Estate.

You may or may not be aware that we have a residential centre at Gibside, and also provide a wide range of activities.

Over the last few months, we have tailored our packages to fit in with the Activity badges offered by both Scouts and Girlguiding UK, and we are now keen to start rolling these out. We also want to develop strong links with the Local Youth Groups in the Region.

We would like therefore to invite any interested Leaders to an Open Day at Gibside on Sunday 23rd February 2014. We will have a short presentation about The Stables and also give a tour of our facilities, as well as a walk around the Estate so people can see where our activities take place.

We will meet at 12.30pm for a 1pm start. There are Shuttle Buses available to get people from the main car park to The Stables for those who don’t want to walk. Tea and Coffee will be provided.

I would be grateful if you could pass this information on to the Leaders in your Counties / Districts and ask that individuals reply directly to us if they are intending to come along. We will need to know by Monday 10th February to sort out arrangements at our end.

The email addresses to reply to are either

Please get in touch with us if there are any questions at all, we are happy to help.

We hope that this will be an interesting, informative day that will also give Leaders a chance to see the Estate and the facilities in a different light!

Many thanks, and we look forward to welcoming as many Leaders as possible on the day.

Orin Walker - RIP

Orin was a Scout at 19th Durham for a number of years but not presently (I believe) involved in Scouting. I am sure a number of Scouts, Explorers and Leaders across the District will remember him fondly.

I presently have no further details beyond those available here

County Cub Dodge Ball Competition

This email is to let you know about a new competition for Cubs in Durham Scout County that should be fun and exciting for all taking part. We are introducing an annual Dodgeball Competition for Cubs. This year's event is taking place at the Raich Carter Sports Centre in Sunderland. We have a new trophy to present to the winners so get your teams entered and lets have a great day. Please pass this information onto your Cub Leaders who do not have email addresses on the Scout database so all Cubs have the opportunity to enter.

Details of the competition are below:

Date: Saturday 15th February, 10:00 - 15:30 - registration 09:15

Where: Raich Carter Sports Centre, Commercial Road, Hendon, Sunderland SR2 8PD

Cost: £1 per Cub, Teams are 6 a side but if the competition fills then they will have a minimum of 4 games so you could bring along substitutes and rotate teams

Who can enter: Packs can enter as many teams as they wish until the enter is full. In order to complete the competition in one day we are limiting the number of entries to 15 teams

Lunch: Bring a packed lunch, free drinks will be available all day.

Uniform: Due to the nature of the competition Cubs do not need to be in full uniform but bring neckers for the prize giving.

First Aid: We will be having first aid cover at the event.

Consents: You need to arrange consent forms and have the appropriate information about medical conditions in order to pass this on to our First Aider in the event of an accident.

Rules: I imagine that every Cub pack has it's own rules for Dodgeball, we will be using the Dodgeball UK rules (with slight variations for gender as teams can be made up of both male and female members), the balls are also slightly lighter to avoid injuries. We will be using Leaders thoroughout the day as referees.

Please email the attached booking form to Moor House asap to secure places and at the latest by 7th February and send entry fees prior to the event to confirm your booking. Joining packs will be sent out once your booking is confirmed

Explorer Leader Training Weekend

The District will financially support any Explorer Leaders who would like to attend this training at Bradley Wood.

A reminder of the DESC Development weekend, which is being held over the weekend of 7th – 9th February 2014, at Bradley Wood Scout Camp.

Demand for Explorer Scouting in Durham Scout County continues to grow and it is important that all of our Districts are able to meet demand and continue to develop the section. This weekend is designed to give you the ideas and tools to support such development, which should be part of every District’s development plan.

This is being organised by the North East Region and is open to all DESCs in the region - or anyone responsible for the development and management of Explorer Scouts at the District level (keen ESLs / AESLs are also welcome). If you can’t attend, please feel free to nominate someone else from your District but note that places are limited.

Sessions include:
· Growing the section
· Best practice
· Management of a Unit / District
· Section specific support
· International expeditions
· Awards & the Young Leader Scheme
· Administrative support
· Activities

There is no charge for the training / accommodation – all you (or your District) need to pay for is £10 towards the cost of food and transportation.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Bradley Wood in February. A Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for everything that you have done for Explorer Scouting in 2013
